In school last week, we sang the hymn, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Whenever I would sing this in church, I always wondered about these words found in the second verse:
Here I raise mine Ebenezer,
Hither by thy help I'm come;
What is an "Ebenezer"? All that came to mind was a grouchy old man who hated Christmas. But why would you want to raise him up? An odd picture.
Well, we are also studying 1 Samuel this semester and good ol' Ebenezer turns up there, too.
Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, “Till now the LORD has helped us.”
In Hebrew, Ebenezer means "stone of help". Mystery solved.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.
